The funding of recycling in BC is done through a simple concept – Producers pay for recycling costs for their products. This is called Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). *This means we cannot accept articles that do not fall in the designated product categories – so we cannot accept miscellaneous pieces of glass, metal, plastic etc.

Aerosol cans: Yes, in general we take aerosol cans. However, for spray paints, see Paint section.
Aluminum cans: Yes, we accept all aluminum cans and we particularly appreciate your donations of deposit pop and beer cans, as part of our revenue. Thank you!
Appliances: Countertop appliances ONLY. Small appliances such as microwaves, toaster ovens, bread makers, coffee makers, frying pans etc. PROVIDED they are battery or electric powered. We are unable to take large appliances such as washing machines, fridges, or hot water tanks. Hartland Landfill does accept large appliances at no cost.
Batteries: Household only please. No automotive or marine.
Cassette tapes: Yes.
Corrugated Cardboard: Preferably flattened, all cardboard.
Cell phones: We accept used cell phones and accessories.
Corks: No, but plastic corks can be included with plastic containers,

DVD and CDs: Yes.
Electronics: Yes! All electronics including: televisions, computers, printers, cables, keyboards, stereos, telephones and electronic media.
Fabric & Clothing: We are unable to take these at this current time, if clothing is in good condition, the Mayne Island Thrift Store accepts clothing donations.
Fluorescent tubes: These are hazardous materials containing mercury therefore we can only accept unbroken tubes. Please hand to attendant.

Gas Powered Appliances: We are unable to take this
Glass bottles and jars: Yes, but no window glass, no drinking glasses, no ceramics, no mirrors.
Glass beverage bottles: Yes, wine, liquor, juice and milk bottles, etc.
Glass (non-container): We are unable to take this (e.g. windows, drinking glasses)
Household Hazardous: Click here for a full list of the Household Hazardous Waste that we do and do not accept. Hartland Landfill does accept some household hazardous waste. For more information see here.
Inkjet & Toner cartridges: Accepted
Light Bulbs and Lamps: All light bulbs and fixtures are accepted at the depot.
Milk Containers: Both plastic and cartons, including soy, almond and oat milk, now have a deposit fee. They are collected at the Depot in a separate tote.
Paint: Leftover household paint in original, labelled cans, spray paint cans, and empty paint cans. Please check with staff as we get penalised for non-program materials. Nothing poured into a separate container!
Paper: Newspapers and other paper such as office paper, magazines, junk mail, phone books, cereal boxes, paper bags. See below for Tetra Paks and paper milk containers. No personal tissues, no carbon paper, no multi-layered material. No contents of bathroom waste containers please!
Plastic bags (stretchy): Please ensure plastic bags are clean. If unsure please check with staff.
Plastic bags (crinkly): Chip bags, coffee bags, cellophane, candy wrappers, multilayered stand-up pouches, ziploc bags (if zipper piece attached).
Plastic beverage containers: Again we thank you for donating returnables. We do get the full deposit, which is part of our operating budget.
Plastic containers and lids: Yes, e.g. yogurt and margarine tubs.
Plastics (Non-Container): Mayne Island Recycling Depot accepts non-container plastic. This includes garden furniture, pails, toys, kitchen items and household goods. These items must not contain metal or other non-plastic components. Vinyl is not accepted. PVC piping is not accepted. Soft non-container plastic is not accepted.
Propane Tanks: We are unable to take these in any size. Hartland landfill does take propane tanks and cylinders (max 100lbs) at no cost.
Scrap Metal: We are unable to take this. Hartland Landfill does accept scrap metals at no cost, please see their website for details.
Smoke alarms & carbon monoxide alarms: Yes, BUT these contain radioactive material and can only be accepted intact.
Styrofoam: We accept CLEAN, packing material, but cannot accept packing "peanuts." Meat trays must be washed and clean. No building insulation material accepted.
Tetra-Paks: Milk cartons, juice boxes, all gable-top cartons – collected in two categories – deposit and non-deposit. No deposit on soup or dairy / dairy alternatives at the moment, most others have a deposit.
Thermostats: - Yes, if intact and untampered.
Tin and aluminum cans: Yes, cans, aluminum foil, spray cans for food products.
Video Tape cassettes complete with cases or boxes: With electronics.
