Beginning in 2016, the Recycling Society began working with the organizers of the three major community events - Saint Mary Magdalene's Church Fair, the Agricultural Society's Fall Fair, and the Lion's Salmon Barbeque, to reduce the garbage at these events. This initiaive has been a tremendous success by both reducing the amount of garbage at the source through packaging and then ensuring that what is used at the event is effectively recycled. For example, the Ag. Society replaced plastic water bottles that were for sale with a water dispenser and reusable cups. In one year, the garbage produced at the Fall Fair went from 11 large bags to 3. To ensure that the disposable items at these events were recycled, we removed all the garbage cans on site and set up a recycling station. Here the public was educated into the finer arts of what goes where and how clean it needs to be.
