In 2015 the Capital Regional District banned all food waste from the garbage stream. In the urban areas this ban was accompanied with curbside compost bins. However, in the rural areas we needed to come up with our own solutions with what to do with food waste. Most islanders already composted their raw vegetable and fruit peals but what to do with the cooked food, bones and animal scraps that attract rodents. The CRD was offering Green cones at a discount for composting these rodent attractive foods. The recycling society assisted this initiative by bringing on island cones for sale and accompanied this with composting workshops. In all we sold over 100 cones here making Mayne Island one of the most densely coned places in the CRD region.
