 A big thank you to all beach captains, cleanup teams, recycling depot volunteers, and supporting businesses who took part in the annual beach cleanup! Our beaches are now a lot cleaner. Even mother nature helped out, giving us a break from the rain just in time for the cleanup start on Sunday. 154 volunteers removed over 10 cubic meters (10,000 litres) of material from the beaches, and sorted it at the Mayne Island Recycling depot. New this year: - Thanks to a team of adult and children volunteers organized by the Tsartlip First Nation Stewardship Department, the Helen Point reserve lands were included in the 2023 beach cleanup! - Thanks to a partnership with Ocean Legacy Inc., we are diverting 70% of the material collected from the landfill to their recycling facility near Steveston Harbour in Richmond BC, which specializes in recycling marine debris. The Ocean Legacy team will work to separate and and process the hard plastics from buoys, barrels, buckets, etc. as well as rope and netting, and use their recycling partner Waste Connections for the EPS (styrofoam), as well as Liberty Tire Recyclers via Tire Stewardship BC to recycle the rubber from tires. These clean-ups have always been a popular activity, with often a hundred volunteers clearing a ton or more of debris from our beaches. For over two decades the Recycling Society, in partnership with the Mayne Island Conservancy has led an annual one day clean-up of beaches on Mayne Island. Held in the springtime, this massive volunteer effort combs all of our popular beaches, removing the flotsam and jetsam. Typically over a ton of debris is removed, brought to the depot, where it is sorted and weighed, and then trucked off island for disposal. This fun activity not only leaves our beaches beautiful for our residents and visitors, but removes hazardous wastes from the marine environment. On return trips with our recycling truck, we can haul landscape materials back from Vancouver Island to your property on Mayne. Our truck can carry loads of up to: - two yards of sand or gravel; - three yards of soil; or - five yards of bark mulch. One material per load, no mixing. We deliver right to your yard, and can drop off on a well-marked tarp if you're not available at the drop off time. Transport cost per load is $100, and we offer a discounted rate of $50 for registered non-profit societies. Previously, only plastic, metal, and glass packaging, and paper products were included in the Recycle BC program. This change (effective Jan 1st 2023) expands the accepted material list to include items that are used as packaging or for a single use, but were purchased as a product; including things like plastic cutlery, aluminum foil baking tins, and reusable plastic shopping bags. What we can recycle at the depot here on Mayne is determined by Recycle BC, which oversees collection and management of recyclable materials across the province. The Recycle BC residential packaging and paper recycling program is an example of extended producer responsibility (EPR), where the companies and organizations that produce or distribute a material - in this case packaging and paper - are responsible for collecting and managing the material at the end of its useful life. In Recycle BC’s program, producers pay fees based on the amount of material they provide to BC residents, and the fees are used to manage collection and recycling programs. The new amendment to the provincial regulation requires producers to take responsibility for a greater range of products. \Want to meet just about everyone on Mayne Island? The Recycling Society is investigating the feasibility and interest in accepting used oil at the Depot. Despite very wet, cool weather, 90 dedicated volunteers participated in the annual Mayne Island Beach cleanup, held on Sunday, May 15th. A big thank you to all the beach cleaners, captains, and depot crew that came out on Sunday, and also thanks to those of you who have picked up garbage on your beach walks throughout the year! This year's cleanup removed 583 kg of plastic, styrofoam, tires, and other garbage from our beaches: that's over half a metric tonne of material that would otherwise pollute our natural environment and cause harmful effects to intertidal and marine life. A number of participants noticed the mess caused by the breakdown of styrofoam into tiny granules that are almost impossible to remove from the beach. If you share this concern, please consider writing a letter to our MLA, Adam Olsen, and our Environment Minister, George Heyman, to take action to regulate or ban the presence of styrofoam in the marine environment. Effective February 1, 2022, a provincially mandated deposit fee will be charged for milk containers at point of purchase. This applies to milk containers of all sizes, both plastic and cartons, and also applies to milk substitutes such as soy milk, almond milk and oat milk.
This deposit regulation does NOT apply to: containers of buttermilk, whipping cream, all other various types of cream, condensed or evaporated milk, infant formula, dietary or meal replacement supplements (e.g. Boost), drinkable yogurt, dairy concentrates, modified milk- derived products (e.g. kafir), or other dairy products such as yogurt, pudding, sour cream, cheese, ice-cream, etc. The deposit fees on milk containers can be redeemed at a Bottle Depot. For those people bringing their containers to our Recycling Depot, there will be a separate tote for your deposit milk containers. All other dairy containers will continue to be collected with the non-deposit plastic, paper and metal containers. Covid operations still currently apply at the Depot — altered schedule; only 3 cars at a time in the depot bays; mask wearing is mandatory. |
